Pet Exam

What Happens During a Thorough Pet Exam

A pet exam is more than just a cursory glance. A pet exam is a meticulous and detailed process to determine how your pet is feeling. When we perform a typical dog exam or cat exam, we consider a pet’s behavior, nutrition, movement, and internal organ functions. This is a comprehensive process to determine a pet’s well-being. Here are some of the things we check during a pet exam:

●        Weight and body-condition scoring on a digital scale

●        Heart and lung sounds using a stethoscope

●        Check the temperature with a digital thermometer

●        Check the pet’s eyes and ears with an ophthalmoscope and an otoscope

●        Check the pet’s teeth with a dental probe and visualization

●        Check the internal organs with abdominal palpation

We also perform blood tests, urinalysis, fecal exams, and blood pressure tests in-house, so any hidden problems are identified early.

Tools of the Trade, and Why They Matter

The tools of the trade that we use in the vet clinic are modern and evidence-based to ensure that the examination of your pet is accurate and as painless as possible. The tools that we use during the examination of your pet include:

●        Stethoscope for cardiac and respiratory assessment

●        Otoscope the examination of the ears and detection of infections

●        Ophthalmoscope for the examination of the eyes and detection of ocular disease

●        Digital thermometer and pulse-oximeter for the monitoring of vital signs

●        Blood chemistry analyzers and CBC machines for the analysis of blood

●        X-ray and ultrasound for internal imaging when needed

Vaccinations, Spay/Neuter, and Preventive Care

During the pet exam, the pet doctor will likely ask about the pet’s vaccination status. Pet vaccinations against serious diseases are provided according to the pet’s lifestyle. The pet doctor will likely discuss the following pet vaccinations during the pet exam:

●     Dog Vaccinations: distemper/parvo (DHPP), rabies, and bordetella and eptospirosis (as appropriate)

●     Cat Vaccinations: FVRCP (feline distemper combination), rabies, and FeLV as indicated

We will also address dog spaying and neutering, as well as cat spaying and neutering. This ensures pet owners understand the timing, benefits, and recovery process.
